The publication is the definitive record of pgm supply and demand in 2012, based for the most on information available up to the end of september 2012. It also includes a short-term market outlook and six month platinum and palladium price forecasts.

Published in English, Japanese, Russian and Chinese, the review is launched at a press/analyst conference in London a the start of "Platinum Week".

Homogeneous Catalysis continues to be a thriving discipline and to deliver important discoveries at the service of society. One gauge of its importance is the number of recent Nobel Prizes for discoveries related to catalysis (2001, 2005, 2007 and the most recent one in 2010 for “palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling in organic synthesis” to Heck, Negishi and Suzuki). It now faces new challenges as it represents perhaps the most relevant contribution of chemistry to sustainable development. Areas in which catalysis in general and homogeneous catalysis in particular will give a major contribution are the development of more direct synthetic pathways for fine chemical production, the increase of reaction selectivities (waste reduction) and efficiency (energy saving), transfer of existing processes to non toxic solvents (operator safety), light harvesting and transformation to chemical energy (renewable energy), carbon dioxide fixation (global warming), and so forth.

In response to a trend of minimising the lead content in gasoline, in the 1960s Shell developed a process for isomerising “tops” (a C5/C6 fraction) to increase the octane number of that fraction. This process is called Hysomer (from: Hydroisomerisation). It is based on a Pt/zeolite mordenite catalyst. The first commercial unit, 400 t/d, came on stream in May 1970 in a Shell refinery near La Spezia, Italy. Up till the early 1990s many Hysomer units were built, mostly in combination with Union CarbideÊ¼s Isosiv process to eliminate all nparaffins (by separation, also based on a zeolite), thus maximising the octane gain.

The present symposium highlights the development and the first implementation of the Hysomer process, as well as its further history and some modern ideas concerning the C5/C6 hydroisomerisation reaction mechanism and zeolite science.

The KNCV section Catalysis and the Dutch Chemical Historical Group organise the symposium together with Shell Technology Centre Amsterdam (STCA), which is also the venue of the symposium.
