Zimplats worried over electricity supply 6th July 2007

Impala Platinum's Zimbabwean operation, Zimplats, has warned that production could be hit over the course of the year unless a secure electricity supply can be guaranteed.

The country's economic crisis has resulted in concerns that electricity supply may prove a long-term problem and as such Impala Platinum Chief Executive, David Brown, has revealed that the company is looking at ways to ensure a continuous energy supply at its Zimbabwean operations.

Speaking to Reuters, Mr Brown said that there had so far been only minor problems with energy supply in the country, but as the economic crisis deepens, the problems are anticipated to get worse.

"Certainly the issues that are starting to come through is the consistency of electricity supply, which obviously is quite crucial for our business," Mr Brown explained.

He went on to add that the company is looking into "a number of solutions" to the issue.
