Zimplats: Ngezi workers back at full capacity 30th June 2004

Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats) has confirmed that all workers at the Ngezi platinum mine have now returned to work.

Striking workers from Horlock Mining - the mining contractor at the Ngezi open pit mine - are now working at full capacity, with Zimplats confirming that full production output has been resumed.

However, the firm also warned that it had used up some of its resources coping with the strike.

In a statement the company declared: "Due to the ability to process stockpiled ore during the strike, financial losses are not significant although stockpiles have been severely depleted."

The Australian-listed outfit was forced to suspend some mining operations at its Ngezi project, as the operation became potentially unstable.

Workers from Horlock Mining were involved in a 'go slow' action prompting a series of stoppages in production as a result of health and safety concerns, and also the potential risk to machinery.

Ngezi's open pit produced 458,000 metric tons of ore containing platinum, palladium, gold and rhodium in the opening quarter up to March 31st.
