Zimbabwean platinum strikes on hold as talks begin 13th October 2004

Strikes affecting the platinum industry in Zimbabwe have been temporarily halted after Zimbabwe's Chamber of Mines agreed to resume discussions with workers.

Platinum industry miners, who had been on strike since October 7th, were told by their union to go back to work as officials met to try to thrash out a new wage deal.

Webster Ndlovu, a spokesperson for the Associated Mineworkers of Zimbabwe, explained to Business Report: "All the workers have been told to go back to work."

The catalyst for the strikes came when companies including Impala Platinum rejected calls from the unions to ramp up minimum pay.

Implats executive director Les Paton said that his firm had seen less than ten per cent of workers strike at the Makwiro mine.

Yesterday Zimbabwe's Chamber of Mines revealed that as many as 25,000 workers were striking nationwide, but could not give figures for the impact of the stoppages on production.
