Zimbabwe's mining sector concerned over skills 13th September 2006
The mining industry in Zimbabwe has raised fears of a serious skills shortage in the country as many people move abroad to find better-paying jobs.
The Chamber of Mines is worried that the continued movement of skilled workers out of Zimbabwe will soon threaten the country's economic recovery, which is largely based around the mining industry.
Zimbabwe's mining sector has overtaken agriculture as the most important section of the country's economy and considerable amounts of platinum are produced in the country.
However, the continued movement of people abroad has led to mining companies employing graduates without the necessary skills and knowledge in important positions. The chamber warned that such a position "is compromising quality of standards".
In a statement, the chamber issued a bleak forecast for the future of mining in Zimbabwe, saying: "The situation for the sector is not looking too good. Other major issues affecting the sector include electricity supply interruptions, high cost of production and the overvalued exchange rate."
