World's biggest LCD screen unveiled 8th March 2005
Electronics manufacturer Samsung is to debut the world's largest LCD panel at the Cebit show in Hanover.
The screen, which is a colossal 82-inch widescreen, is the product of a joint development by Samsung and Sony.
It boasts high-definition and will enter mass manufacture next month.
The contrast ratio is 1200:1, while a brightness of 600 candela per square metre is said to generate a crisp picture on such a huge screen.
The screen also features a 180 degree visual access system, which maximises the number of users who can view the screen.
For the manufacturer the additional bonus is the cost of production thanks to the advantage gained from cutting much larger sheets of glass on bigger economies of scale.
Built in South Korea, the screen is indicative of the growing demand for LCD televisions and increasingly large display screens.
Platinum producers will also be heartened by the news, with the precious metal essential in the production of LCD.
