Ways to achieve the celebrity platinum look 16th December 2011
Anne Hathaway, Reese Witherspoon and Carey Mulligan have all been showing off their platinum engagement rings recently, and these styles can be achieved by people without a Hollywood-sized budget.
According to jewellery expert Michael O'Connor, there are plenty of ways for everyone to enjoy platinum.
"Since most of us can't afford to spend what some celebrities spend on an engagement ring, here are a few great tips on how you can still get one of the latest celebrity platinum ring styles without breaking the bank," he says.
The first tip is, like Anne Hathaway, to go for a solitaire diamond on a solid platinum band or one with some micro-pave.
Mr O'Connor explains that this design draws attention to the centre diamond, making it look larger because of the natural whiteness of the metal.
Alternatively, pave diamonds on the band can be great way to add some sparkle without stretching the budget too much.
The jewellery expert notes that the "modern elegance" of small diamonds sitting closely together covering a narrow platinum band is "capturing the imaginations of celebrities like Reese Witherspoon".
Finally, he advises coloured gem stones to go with a platinum band, a style that has come back into vogue thanks to Kate Middleton, Penelope Cruz, Liz Hurley and Carey Mulligan.
"And now is a great time to buy platinum, as it has never been available at such extraordinary value now that the metal price is trading below gold," adds Mr O'Connor.
