Volkswagen unveils new hybrid fuel cell model 14th June 2005
A hybrid fuel cell vehicle from German manufacturer Volkswagen has gone on show at an exhibition in San Francisco.
The Volkswagen Touran Hymotion uses an 80 kW high-torque electric motor that draws its power from a fuel cell and has no emissions.
The company already has petrol and diesel hybrid versions on sale, which it says are the most successful vans by far available in Germany.
When converted, the Touran's hydrogen tank has a capacity of 1.9 kg, which corresponds to the energy contained in 7.5 litres of petrol.
The motor also has a high level of efficiency - a full tank enables the Touran to drive for around 160 km.
The Touran HyMotion went on display last week in San Francisco at an event said to be the largest presentation of fuel cell vehicles in the world.
