Victorious Springboks given commemorative platinum medals 8th November 2007
The Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks team have been rewarded for their endeavours with exclusive, commemorative medals cast in pure platinum.
The medals, which were handed out to the team at a ticker-tape parade in Cape Town to mark their victory, were the brainchild of Mvelaphanda Group chief executive and co-owner of the Springbok Supporters' Club, Tokyo Sexwale.
About 50 medals are to cast in total, with ten to be auctioned off to fund sport development, said Mr Sexwale's spokesperson Chris Vick.
Mr Sexwale told sabcnews.com: "We have to show that caring willingness to accept the Springboks as ours, these are our lads - this is our team - our national symbol. The class of '95 received gold from us at the time I was premier of Gauteng. They have done it again and we decided that we should up the stakes so the Springboks will be awarded this - a total of 50 medals - let us christen them our platinum boys".
Following the 1995 World Cup win, the team were rewarded with gold medals, however, with platinum prices currently standing at R10,000 per ounce, these are estimated to be worth double.
