There has been an increase in the sale of high-end jewellery items in the US, it has been reported.

Research by Unity Marketing found that consumers in the US increasingly looked to higher-end jewellery and more expensive designs during the second half of 2006, with $62.2 billion spent on jewellery and watches by US consumers.

The study found that the luxury end of the jewellery market saw sales of fine watches grow by 39 per cent and fine jewellery increased by ten per cent.

Commenting on the figures, president of Unity Marketing Pam Danziger said: "Jewellery shoppers moved more up-market in 2006, choosing to buy fine jewellery and watches more frequently, rather than their cheaper costume counterparts."

She added: "With their eye on more expensive designs, they turned more often to specialty jewellery stores where they got expert advice which boosted their confidence to spend the substantial amounts they did for their purchases."
