US prepares for mandatory emission tests 29th December 2005
The US is preparing for a raft of new emissions tests beginning January 1st, as mandatory tests are introduced.
Different counties across American states will introduce the new rules, calculating air monitoring data and vetting all the registered vehicles.
A large logistical operation, the authorities say all cars and light duty trucks manufactured since 1996 will need to be checked.
North Carolina Division of Air Quality director Keith Overcash told the Daily News that the state was prepared for the changes, which would enact key changes.
"Cars and trucks account for about half of the ozone-forming emissions state-wide and up to 70 per cent in urban counties," he said.
"So, it's important to ensure that vehicles' emissions controls are working properly."
The US has been introducing steadily stricter rules governing vehicle emissions, a trend echoed in most of the major economies across the world to counteract the public health threat.
