The US Mint is likely to produce palladium coins in the near future, though it will depend on the potential demand from investors.

It has been producing platinum, gold and silver American Eagle coins for some time, but the palladium version would mark a new departure.

The American Eagle Palladium Bullion Coin Act of 2010, which was signed into law by Barack Obama, provides for palladium coins to be minted at no net cost to taxpayers.

As such, a feasibility study must be carried out to assess potential demand from investors for the coins.

The law dictates that an "independent third party" will be sought to conduct an "analysis of the market for palladium bullion investments".

It is thought that the coins would appear sometime next year, as production has to start within 12 months of the report.

The palladium used in the coins has to come from domestic mines. Only the Stillwater Mining Company in Montana produces palladium in the US.
