US offers $1.3m for clean bus projects 22nd June 2007

The US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has announced it is offering over $1.3 million in grants for the development of clean diesel school bus programmes.

As part of the West Coast Collaborative and Clean School Bus USA schemes, the initiative is seeking applications for the funding that will see existing diesel school buses retrofitted with emissions-reducing technology.

Diesel oxidation catalysts have already helped to significantly reduce the emissions being produced by school buses in the US. In April last year, a grant from the EPA enabled three school districts in Idaho to retrofit 105 buses with both diesel oxidation catalysts and closed crankcase ventilation systems, thereby considerably reducing emissions.

It is hoped this latest round of funding will help to deliver support to similar schemes and enable more buses across the west coast of the US to be retrofitted with diesel oxidation catalysts to help reduce the amount of emissions being produced.
