US firm starts platinum coil treatment in aneurysm trials 3rd April 2007

US medical technology firm Boston Scientific has announced that enrolment of volunteers has begun to test its Matrix and Platinum Science (Maps) aneurysm treatment machines.

The Massachusetts-based company aims to use a sample group of 630 people in 50 locations worldwide to test how effective the technology can be in preventing the recurrence of aneurysms.

Test volunteers will be divided into groups randomly and treated either with bare-platinum Matrix2 detachable coils, GDC detachable coils or Matrix2 coils that are coated in polyglycolic polyactic acid bio-polymer, which pre-clinincal studies suggest can improve treatment.

Cameron McDougall, of Boston Scientific, who has co-headed the trials, said: "It is gratifying to achieve this milestone of first patient enrolment. Not only is this trial important in its own right, but it further demonstrates that multidisciplinary aneurysm trials can and will help define the future of aneurysm treatment."

Boston Scientific employs 29,000 people worldwide and has been involved in the development and manufacture of medical technology for 25 years.
