US consumers move to more fuel efficient models 6th July 2006
Strong evidence has emerged that US car buyers are increasingly looking for cars that feature greater fuel efficiency.
The country's domestic makers have seen sales of larger vehicles fall, while foreign makers and small cars have seen increasing sales.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the world's largest auto maker General Motors saw sales of light trucks fall 37 per cent to 236,019 in June.
The category includes SUVs, minivans and pickups, which have suffered as consumers have steered clear of models with poor fuel economy due to high petrol pump prices.
Light-truck sales at Ford were down 14 per cent, including a nearly double-digit decline for its F-Series pickup.
"Higher gas prices are contributing to lower truck sales, particularly in the large SUV and pickup categories," the company said.
