Hydrogen-fuelled vehicles will play a key role in the future of the UK's transport industry, one government official has suggested.

Junior Transport Minister Mike Penning visited the Air Products Series 100 fuelling station at the University of Birmingham on Tuesday (5th October).

He was able to witness the fuelling of one of the university's hydrogen-powered cars and took a test drive in a Microcab to experience the technology for himself.

Mr Penning, who was taking time out from the Conservative party conference, was suitably impressed with the UK's first permanent hydrogen fuelling station.

"A one size fits all approach to low-carbon vehicles simply isn't feasible," he said.

"In order for the UK to decarbonise road transport, a mix of technologies including hydrogen has to be considered."

The 53-year-old was also given a special preview of the new Microcab design currently being worked on at the university and a tour of its research facility.

Mr Penning managed to achieve the greatest Labour to Conservative swing (14.4 per cent) in the country during the 2010 general election.
