TWP Projects outlines SA platinum mining developments 25th August 2009
TWP Projects has issued updates for a number of significant platinum mining projects in South Africa, Mining Weekly reported on Friday (21st August).
The multi-disciplinary consulting engineering firm is playing a prominent role in Anglo Platinum's Paardekraal Two project, where the PK Number One shaft is being developed.
Sinking of the Number Two main and ventilation shafts is also occurring, with access to the bottom of the mine now set to be handed over to the world's largest platinum producer.
In addition, the firm noted that Impala Platinum's new Number 17 vertical shaft project - the first deep-level mine in its mining lease area - should yield 225,000 tonnes of platinum metal ore per month from the Merensky and UG2 reefs.
The second-largest producer of platinum in the world is also overseeing work at its Number 20 shaft project, where surface infrastructure is almost completed as it aims to reach full production by 2011.
Meanwhile, Wesizwe Platinum's Frischgewaagd-Ledig mine in North West province - for which TWP carried out a feasibility study - is scheduled to hit steady-state production by 2016.
The project, which encompasses the sinking of two vertical shafts, is predicted to produce 350,000 oz pgm per year, with an estimated life-of-mine of 35 years at a monthly production rate of 230,000 tonnes.
