TV putting strain on LCD suppliers 27th October 2005
The massive boom in demand for LCD televisions is putting serious pressure on the resources for LCD manufacturers, it has been claimed.
Market research company iSuppli has warned that the growing interest in LCD screens is exacerbating constraints in the market for materials needed in the manufacturing of LCD panels, including glass substrates and cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs).
The major problem for manufacturers is that television LCD screens are by far the largest LCD items produced, far larger than the other boom areas of PDAs and laptop screens.
Recent research has found that the biggest growth market in LCD television screens will be for larger screens, meaning that manufacturers are having to develop new technologies to account for this demand, resulting in a further intensification of supply problems.
Research from International Data Corp (IDC) earlier this month suggested that demand for LCD screens would result in them overtaking sales of cathode-ray-tube (CRT) monitors in the near future, while the president of Samsung’s LCD division recently predicted that the worldwide LCD television market will reach 100 million units by 2010.
