Toyota's Fine-T fuel cell on show 7th April 2006

The new Toyota Fine-T fuel cell hybrid is to be shown at the New York Auto Show next week.

Debuted in Tokyo last year and recently on display at the Geneva Motor Show, the Fine-T Concept is the size of a Yaris and runs on a high-performance Toyota fuel cell stack configuration.

It makes use of a new alloy catalyst, meaning that it uses a smaller quantity of precious metals and cuts down on production costs. The car's interior features plant-derived carbon neutral materials that help to lower overall CO2 emissions.

The car also features a low centre of gravity to improve driving stability, as well as an innovative four-wheel steering system that makes parking easier.

Toyota's eventual aim is to produce cars with non-polluting engines that clean the air around them.

Speaking to the Guardian, the Japanese carmaker's chief executive, Katsuaki Watanabe, said the company aims to make "the dream vehicle, which makes the air cleaner, never injures people, makes people healthier and can run on a single tank of fuel between London and Istanbul".
