The high price of precious metals puts premium on recycling 12th April 2006

High commodity prices are making the recycling of precious metals such as platinum all the more attractive.

The resellable value of certain metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium has become so great that it has sparked a flurry of thefts, according to police in the US.

Catalytic converters from a model of 1990s Toyota trucks and SUVs are being targeted by thieves. In one case, a man was found with nine of the converters.

The thieves are focusing on 1990s Toyota 4Runners, Tundras and Tacomas because the catalytic converters are easy to remove, according to a report.

Legitimate ways of recycling these precious metals are also being sought, however.

BCS Recycling Specialists are asking people to hand in their scrap precious metals and in return they will send a cheque to the charity of the customer's choice for the value of the recycled items.

Gold, silver or platinum broken jewellery, cufflinks, chains, earrings, coins, silver or sterling bars are all collected.
