TFT LCD glass substrate manufacturers increased their capacity in 2010, according to the latest DisplaySearch Quarterly LCD Glass Substrate Report, which estimated 32 per cent year-on-year growth and 13 per cent in 2011.

The figures suggest that between Q2 2009 and Q2 2011, the quarterly area capacity of TFT LCD glass production will increase by 42 per cent as a result of a 15 per cent increase in the number of tanks.

As platinum is involved in the manufacture of tanks, this increase in production is likely to translate to higher demand for pgm from the industrial and glass sectors.

"Glass makers are going to supply an 11 per cent demand increase with seven per cent new tank investments," said Tadashi Uno, director of materials and component research for DisplaySearch.

"The increase in capacity of existing tanks should lead to stronger financial results."

Recently, the research firm estimated 3.2 million global shipments of 3D TV technology in 2010, rising to 91 million in 2014.
