Tennessee retrofits school buses 18th December 2007

Summer County in Tennessee, in the US, has been given a grant by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to retrofit its school buses.

The EPA has provided a $250,000 grant to retrofit the region's school buses with diesel particulate filters so as to reduce the emissions produced by the vehicles.

Forty buses will be retrofitted with the technology, as part of a major strategy being undertaken in Tennessee which is designed to significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality in the region.

Jimmy Palmer, EPA Regional Administrator, said: "EPA is proud to recognize the efforts of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation for their efforts to improve air quality and protect public health."

He added: "Emissions from diesel engines are a serious public health threat and environmental challenge, as well as a priority for EPA."

The grant is the latest in the EPA's Clean School Bus USA programme, which is designed to reduce emissions caused by school buses by retrofitting the vehicles with modern diesel particulate filters and other forms of technology.
