Task Force aims to keep platinum jewellery precious 31st January 2005
A new industry group has been set up to oversee the platinum jewellery market in a bid to ensure only genuine pieces make it into the shop window.
The Advisory Task Force has been established for this purpose after a meeting between the Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC), Manufacturing Jewelers and Suppliers of America and Jewelers of America at the annual JA New York Show.
Participants discussed the manufacture of those products made of platinum or which contain platinum, with the industry experts deciding to try to foster greater accountability and transparency in the market as it continues to swell.
According to the JVC the issue of authenticity has become an increasingly pertinent one in the platinum industry, with representatives from the various parts of the supply chain - including manufacturers, refiners, designers and retailers - agreeing greater regulation could prove useful.
Work by the Advisory Task Force will now focus on the current Federal Trade Commission guides for platinum, asking industry figures how they work with the existing regulations and how they could be improved.
In addition, the task force will ask consumers how they understand the term 'platinum', with the findings expected to be made public in spring.
