Syntroleum tests clean jet fuel 21st September 2006
Syntroleum's ultra-clean jet fuel has been successfully tested, the company has announced.
A United States Air Force B-52 Stratofortress Bomber took off from Edwards Air Force Base, in California, using a blend of traditional JP-8 jet fuel and Fischer-Tropsch (FT) fuel developed by Syntroleum.
It is the first time that a jet containing FT fuel has been tested in a military flight and the company stated that it intends to make more test flights in the near future.
Bill Harrison, a fuels expert with the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, commented: "The program culminating in the test flight today is the first step in opening up new horizons for sourcing fuel for military purposes."
Jack Holmes, president and CEO of Syntroleum, stated that the test flight marks a "significant milestone" in the development of clean fuel, ensuring that it can meet the "stringent standards" set down by the US department of defense.
