Sylvania Resources Ltd's Steelpoort platinum operation in South Africa increased production by 31 per cent during the second financial quarter of the year, putting the company in good stead to reach its target of 40,000 oz for 2011.

Total production of pgms and gold was 10,135 oz for the quarter ending in December 2010 - a rise of more then 10,000 oz compared to the previous quarter, Mining Weekly reports.

The SteelPoort operation contributed 3,612 oz of this figure during the quarter, due to higher grades at the location, while revenue from the Australian-based company's tailings operations also rose by around 30 per cent.

In July last year, Sylvania announced that it was commissioning the Doornbosch pgm plant in South Africa, the fifth pgm and chrome recovery plant commissioned in the country.

The plant is "well-positioned to become one of the lowest cost producers of the Sylvania plants, due to the potentially high grade feed that we expect from this new mine," according to chief executive officer Terence McConnachie.
