Stillwater negotiations unlikely before Friday 15th July 2004

Talks between union officials and management at Stillwater Mining Co's operations at Nye, Columbus are unlikely to resume before Friday.

Around 900 members of the Paper, Allied Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International (PACE) union started industrial action on Monday at the Nye mine, smelter and warehouse.

The action comes after 70 per cent of miners last week rejected the pay deal agreed by union leaders and the company

Local union president Brad Shorey told the Billings Gazette that union officials would be talking to members tonight to identify their key demands preventing any talks with management occurring before Friday at the earliest.

"I want to isolate issues with the group and get them narrowed down to things we can live with in a proposal form," Shorey said.

He added: "I'm going to be available anytime they [company officials] want to get together, Saturday or Sunday, whatever."

Earlier this week, Stillwater's chief executive, Frank McAllister, warned that the ongoing strike action would affect the supply of platinum and palladium from mine.
