Still no breakthrough at Modikwa 5th February 2007
Talks remain deadlocked at the Modikwa mine between Anglo Platinum, African Rainbow Metals (ARM) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).
The NUM has said that the strike will continue this week, as talks broke down again on Friday, reports the South African Independent.
"We had a meeting on Friday but we couldn't reach an agreement on continuous operations," explained the NUM's Chief Negotiator, Humbulani Tshikalange.
Although the disagreement began over alleged racism, the NUM has broadened the scope of its concerns and the main sticking point now appears to be the demand that 24-hour operations at the mine be phased out.
The negotiator said the disagreement is now set to go before the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in an effort to restart operations at Modikwa.
It is understood that the mine has suffered significant losses in output and it has been estimated that around R20 million has been lost in production since the industrial action began on January 26th.
