Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has joined up with Intelligent Energy to develop combined heat and power systems (CHP) run by fuel cells.

This is the first time a fuel cell using platinum element metals has joined up with a utility firm to take their product to the market.

SSE will invest £1 million for a 50 per cent share in the new firm, which will be called IE CHP.

Fuel cell hydrogen generation technologies provided by Intelligent Energy will be aimed at SSE's customer base and operations as the firm looks to expand its green energy alternatives.

Ian Merchant, Chief Executive of Scottish and Southern Energy, said: "We are particularly pleased at commencing our commercial involvement in CHP fuel cell technology using Intelligent Energy's fuel cell and reforming expertise, which we believe is clearly suited to our business priorities in this future market."

Henri Winand, Chief Executive of Intelligent Energy, was pleased to be putting fuel cells on the CHP market.

"We have the potential to create a new and energy efficient product portfolio that offers a competitive choice to the consumer," he said.

Previously, Ceramic Fuel Cells Limited (CFCL) announced a deal with Nuon and Centrica has signed a deal with Ceres Power.
