Spectrum wins FDA approval for new platinum-based drug 15th June 2005

US-based Spectrum Pharmaceuticals has revealed Carboplatin, its platinum-based anti-cancer drug, has received approval to be used in various injectable doses.

The Office of Generic Drugs at the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave the approval for the Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) in doses of 50mg, 150mg and 450mg multi-dose vials.

Carboplatin helps in the treatment of a variety of tumour types and is marketed and distributed in America through Cura Pharmaceuticals.

Rajesh C Shrotriya, chairman, CEO and president of Spectrum, said: "This approval of carboplatin marks our entry into the generic injectable market, most notably the anti-cancer segment, an area where we are focusing significant new product development efforts."

Platinum is continuously being used in the health sector for a variety of medicinal purposes, with compounds of the metal used to fight types of cancer in particular.track
