SouthernEra reports progress at Messina 18th June 2004

SouthernEra Resources has released a statement detailing progress at its Messina platinum mine in South Africa's Bushveld Igneous Complex.

The Toronto and London-listed firm explained that its Messina Platinum subsidiary has successfully completed the first blast on the mechanised long-hole stope.

The blast represents the culmination of planning that began almost two years ago to implement mechanised long-hole stoping as the principle mining method on the new lower levels of the mine below the 350-metre level.

Messina general manager Glenn Baldwin said he is "very satisfied" with the results of the first blast.

"It represents an important step forward for Messina Platinum, confirming that the implementation of mechanised long-hole stoping should be successful," he stated.

"This mining method is far superior to the conventional down-dip stoping currently being practiced on the four upper levels of the mine. Significant productivity and cost improvements can be expected from the successful implementation of this new mining method."

SouthernEra also revealed that the Phase 2 feasibility study is on track for completion at the end of June.

Messina Platinum has also completed the implementation of continuous operations at the Phase 1 mine.

SouthernEra president and CEO Patrick Evans commented: "Messina continues to make steady progress towards operating profitability, despite the continuing strength of the South African Rand."
