South African pgm output edges lower in July 10th September 2010
Output of pgms in South Africa declined slightly during July, according to new figures released yesterday (9th September).
Statistics South Africa revealed that pgm production fell by 0.7 per cent, contributing to overall mining production dropping by one per cent on a year-on-year basis.
For the three months to 31st July, country-wide mining output decreased by 4.9 per cent in comparison to the previous quarter, with a 1.7 per cent fall recorded for pgms.
The body also noted that the figure for the quarter was 2.8 per cent lower than in the equivalent period in 2009.
However, there was better news in relation to the total value of mineral sales, which rose by 25.8 per cent on a year-on-year basis in June.
Furthermore, sales for the quarter to the end of June were up by 8.2 per cent on the preceding three-month period, with iron ore (up 7.2 per cent) and gold (up 4.9 per cent) playing key roles.
The data showed that the value of mineral sales in the quarter was 24.8 per cent higher in comparison to the three months to the end of June 2009.
South Africa boasts the world's largest platinum resources and supplies more than three-quarters of global production of the precious metal.
