South Africa looks to beneficiation 9th March 2007
The South African government is increasingly turning its attention to the benefits of beneficiation in an effort to keep the wealth from its natural resources in the country.
Mining has become a huge industry supporting the South African economy and platinum production in particular is becoming increasingly profitable. But much of what is produced in the country still leaves to be refined elsewhere, meaning South Africa is not yet making the most of the raw materials it supplies to the rest of the world in such abundance.
As such, the north-west region of the country is putting greater effort into beneficiation projects in precious metals such as platinum, according to Business Report.
North West Premier, Edna Molewa, said the region's ultimate goal would be to ensure beneficiation even after the mineral deposits in the country have been exhausted.
Speaking at the Investing in African Mining Seminar organised by MineAfrica, Ms Molewa referred to the platinum beneficiation park, which is being developed to teach students how to produce platinum jewellery, as an example of what could be achieved in the country to secure its long-term position in the platinum market.
