Solidarity 'considering Lonmin Platinum's wage offer' 10th December 2007

Members of the Solidarity union are mulling a wage increase offer from Lonmin Platinum, it has been confirmed.

The two parties have been in talks since last week, during which representatives from Lonmin Platinum had ruled out an improved offer and said that the miner would implement its offer unilaterally if no agreement was reached.

Solidarity members were seeking a one-year ten per cent increase as well as housing allowance.

However, Lonmin Platinum has proposed a one-year nine per cent increase with no provision for housing.

Reint Dykema, Spokesman for Solidarity, told Reuters: "We are waiting for a yes or no from our members this Wednesday. If we don't accept the offer, the company will unilaterally implement it. This is not an ideal situation, but we have asked our members whether they will accept what has been offered."

In the event of Solidarity members rejecting the deal, a dispute - the first step towards industrial action - could be declared, Mr Dykema said.

Alternatively, the members may however seek a further round of negotiations next year, he added.
