Shell: Fuel cell vehicles set to soar 30th September 2005
Shell's hydrogen chief, Jeremy Bentham, has predicted that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will become more affordable and be widely produced between 2015 and 2025.
Speaking at the 18th World Petroleum Congress, he suggested that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, currently at prototype stage, would become more commonplace, reports Cape Argus.
At present, hydrogen fuel cells are not regarded as cost-efficient as they are expensive to manufacture from primary energy forces.
It is possible to make hydrogen from renewable and recyclable sources as well as fossil fuels; for example, Russian researchers believe they can extract it from water by using the power from exhaust fumes.
At the Petroleum Congress it was agreed by general consensus that greener fuels such as hydrogen, biofuel and cleaner traditional fuels were the way forward.
