Serena unveils platinum earrings 30th August 2005
Tennis superstar Serena Williams wowed the crowd at this year's US Open tournament with more than just her tennis skills.
The world number eight took to the court wearing 13-karat diamond earrings, set in platinum and estimated to be worth around $40,000.
As she powered past her first round opponent – 16-year-old Yung-Jan Chan – Ms Williams showed off the sparkling pieces, which were on loan to her especially for the occasion.
Entitled the Dream Catcher by Los Angeles designer Erica Courtney, the earrings captivated the attention of the crowd almost as much as the tennis, and the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) was happy to publicise the pieces.
Ms Williams is the latest in a long line of glamorous women to be spotted wearing platinum jewellery, as the metal continues to gain popularity with celebrities.
This year's Emmy Awards are set to see many stars wearing platinum jewellery, with Platinum Guild International (PGI) USA staging its "Red Carpet Jewelry Suite" for those walking down the red carpet for America's "television Oscars" next month.
