Sensitive situation facing Zimbabwe platinum mines 21st July 2008

Zimbabwe's opposition will review all mining concessions, if it should come into power.

According to reports in the Financial Times, the Movement for Democratic Change could review the rules imposed on platinum mines throughout the country.

A senior party figure told the newspaper that it would consider "all mining clauses" as well as ownership agreements made under Robert Mugabe's rule.

It is thought that any decision over mining rights would relate to questions over the circumstances in which the deals were signed off.

Meanwhile, Mugabe has warned British firms operating in Zimbabwe that they could see their firms taken over by local people or investors.

Anglo American, which incorporates Anglo Platinum, is British run and stands to be affected by any developments.

Mugabe said he only wanted businesses from 'friendly' countries to be involved in Zimbabwe, leading to fears over 'corporate seizures'.

According to reports from the Daily Telegraph, China could be one of the 'friendly' countries to benefit.

Mugabe owns a £4.5 million mansion in Harare, made from a deal with China in 2005 in which he signed over the rights to Zimbabwe's platinum.
