Seiko has unveiled a new platinum watch to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one its most popular ranges.

The Grand Seiko Anniversary Collection contains six limited-edition timepieces, including quartz and mechanical offerings, all with newly-enhanced movements.

One of the designs, the Caliber 9R15, is an updated version of the 9R65 Spring Drive watch and comes with a platinum case and a crocodile strap.

"Grand Seiko is, and always has been, the most beautiful, functional and simple watch that Seiko can build," said the company.

"This new caliber is accurate as ten seconds per month, an achievement made possible by the inclusion of specially selected crystals in the regulator, each one of which is meticulously tuned by Seiko's master craftsmen."

All of the new watches contain an inscription reading '50th Anniversary 1960-2010' and the Grand Seiko lion emblem on the dial.

Seiko introduced the Astron, the world's first production quartz watch, in 1969 and gave it a similar price tag to a medium-sized car.
