SCR leads Daimler's research 7th November 2005

Car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler has claimed that selective catalytic-reduction (SCR) technology remains the most productive way to reduce emissions.

The company has invested large amounts of money in developing alternative technologies to reduce emissions released into the atmosphere by its vehicles – including the creation of fuel cells – but according to the firm's head of research and development, Dr Gerald Weber, SCR is currently the most effective way to meet increasingly strict targets on emissions.

Speaking at a technology workshop in Germany, Dr Weber revealed that while fuel cells may have an important role to play in the long term, for the time being SCR technology – which has been released in Europe by Daimler under the name BlueTec – holds the key to ensuring emissions remain low.

"BlueTec has enabled us to reduce fuel consumption and emissions," he commented.

Dr Weber added: "SCR is the best possible technology and is suitable for use worldwide."

According to Dr Weber, the technology will continue to be the foremost in production until 2010, at which point other technologies such as fuel cells may have been developed to a level that will enable them to overtake SCR as the dominant emissions-reducing product available to car-makers.
