Scientist develops platinum-based skin 29th June 2004

A scientist from the US has developed a platinum-based substance that he claims can match the texture and shape of human skin.

University of Texas at Dallas doctoral candidate David Hanson has developed a substitute for the epidermis, potentially opening up a realm of new applications for platinum.

The substance in question is platinum-cured silicone, which echoes the properties of human skin.

Elastic and relatively lightweight, the skin is more naturally pliable and effective than the usual foam-rubber polymers.

Using the new material Hanson told Wired Magazine he had been able to fashion an android face that can be animated with much less force - meaning facial expressions are much more easily managed.

Experts say the development could be a potential breakthrough in creating more life-like robots.
