SA Gov to discuss nationalisation bill with businesses 13th March 2008

The South African Government is ready to meet business leaders to discuss how the Zimbabwe nationalisation law could effect its interests.

According to reports from Engineering News, Aziz Pahad, the Foreign Affairs Minister, will meet with business leaders to discuss Robert Mugabe's Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Bill.

The bill states that local firms must own a 51 per cent share in all Zimbabwe's businesses and it could have an effect on South Africa.

"We are studying this Bill more carefully and then will initiate discussions with the South African business community to get an understanding of how they interpret the bill and how we work together to protect in the broad sense South African interests in Zimbabwe," Mr Pahad explained.

He said that businesses were best equipped to inform the Government of how it would impact on their situation.

Mining firms have already expressed a desire to stay in Zimbabwe and continue with their operations.

Anglo Platinum said they would "engage" with the Zimbabwe Government before making a decision.
