Ruthenium pushes up resistor prices 9th October 2007

The rising price of ruthenium has forced up the price of resistors, as manufacturers face increasingly high material costs.

Walsin Technology and Yageo resistor manufacturers have already announced an increase in the cost of large-size resistors and experts believe that more producers will soon follow suit.

Yageo has revealed it is raising large-size resistors by between five and ten per cent from this month, due to the increased cost of ruthenium.

Although the price per ounce of ruthenium has dropped from a high of close to $900 to around $550 today, it is thought that the recent appreciation of the yuan against the US dollar has been the significant factor in raising the cost of materials for producers.

This is because the majority of resistor manufacturers are based in China, Digi Times explains.
