Ruthenium labelled 'special opportunity' in organic photovoltaics sector 10th March 2009

Ruthenium is playing a valuable role in the success of new dye types for hybrid organic or inorganic dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs), according to a new report released yesterday (9th March).

Nanomarkets, a leading industry analyst company, conducted a range of studies which revealed that sales of both 'pure' organic solar cells (OPVs) and DSCs could reach almost $600 million by 2016.

The platinum group metal - which is one of the rarest metals on the planet - is a newcomer to the industry, but its use by DSCs was highlighted by the report as one of three areas of "special opportunity".

The remaining two areas were comprised by more efficient organic absorber materials and improved electrode materials, both of which could contribute to materials firms meeting small demands from OPV manufacturers and thus making significant orders.

In addition, Nanomarkets noted: "New materials and architectures will similarly spell opportunities for equipment makers. Today, OPV/DSC cell manufacturers require production equipment that is good enough for prototype production.

"The next step will be to create production equipment that is optimised for production runs of working devices."

The company also revealed that it intends to present the findings of the report in a special webinar on 17th March.
