Kate Middleton, the new Duchess of Cambridge, wore a platinum and diamond Halo tiara by Cartier that was lent to her by the Queen for last weekend's royal wedding to Prince William.

Given to the Queen for her 18th birthday, the platinum tiara was originally crafted in 1936 for the Queen Mother.

"What Kate wore is very synonymous with the way that she and William conduct themselves, which is in a very modern and normal way, for royalty," Helena Krodel, director of media and special events at Jewelers of America, told National Jeweler.

"She chose jewellery that was very subtle, combining the old and the new."

The Duchess of Cambridge also wore a set of platinum and diamond earrings given to her by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

Designed by Robinson Pelham, they were custom-made to match the Queen's tiara.

Inspired by the family's new coat of arms, the earrings took the form of stylised oak leaves with a pear-shaped diamond drops and pave-set diamond acorns.

The luxury London firm also produced earrings for Kate's sister Pippa, who was Maid of Honour for the ceremony.

Platinum jewellery worn on the day by the bride complemented the platinum and sapphire engagement ring given to her by Prince William.

"The unique blend of modern, vintage and heirloom pieces of platinum jewellery from both her family and from William's family chosen by Kate illustrate the couple's desire to marry today's elements with the durability and traditions of yesterday," remarked jewellery expert Michael O'Connor.
