Royal Mint issues commemorative platinum coins 2nd November 2007
The Royal Mint has issued a special limited-edition set of coins cast in platinum to commemorate the historic redesign of UK coinage set for 2008.
Priced at £4,995, the Last of the Old sets of seven coins, which have been cast in platinum for the first time, will be limited to 250 customers.
The coins, which have been struck in .9995 platinum to proof quality, will bear the current set of reverse designs and a portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadely.
Buyers will also receive a high-quality, hand-crafted walnut veneer case, which has been exclusively designed to house and preserve the platinum coins, as well as a booklet which details the history of the iconic designs.
Aimed chiefly at the collectors' market, each set also comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Priority will be given to buyers of the Last Of the Old sets when the Royal Mint issues a second set of platinum coins in spring 2008 featuring the new designs.
