Results of platinum-based chemo trials announced 2nd June 2008

Poniard Pharmaceuticals has announced safety and efficacy results from phases one and two of its trial of picoplatin in the treatment of tumour types including ovarian cancer and colorectal cancer.

The phase one study looked at picoplatin and liposomal doxorubicin in patients with advanced solid tumours while the phase two trial examined patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

"The phase one trial in advanced solid tumours showed that both agents could be combined with an acceptable toxicity profile," said Don Dizon, Assistant Professor of Obstetrics-Gynaecology and Medicine at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

He said that picoplatin has the potential to be a platform product with a broad range of uses in tackling cancer and tumours was needed.

He said further development of picoplatin's role in the after treatment of patients who have undergone platinum-based chemotherapy.

Picoplatin is a new generation platinum chemotherapy agent which has the potential to address multiple indications, combinations and formulations.
