Researchers show insight into palladium catalysts 16th June 2008

A new online video is showing the technology behind palladium catalysts which can play an important role in a wide variety of important industries.

The video shows how researchers are using ground-breaking atomic imaging techniques to see how hydrogen atoms behave as they move across a specialised surface.

Scientists from Sykes Lab have explored the structural and electronic uses of palladium and copper as well as palladium and gold alloys.

According to reports from NanoWerk.com, the research team use low temperature STM and spectroscopy to investigate atoms and their structure.

This means they can see how alloys react at different temperatures and the research has shown that there are differences between the electronic structure of isolated palladium atoms when they are combined with different metals.

Now they are varying the surface composition of the palladium in an attempt to find the best conditions for hydrogen dissociation to allow better alloys to be constructed for future hydrogen applications.
