Pt-based aneurysm surgery is 29th December 2005

A leading American aneurysm specialist has said the new platinum-based non-invasive surgery technique for tackling the condition represents the future of successful treatment.

Dr David Chalif, who is co-director of North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System's new Brain Aneurysm Centre, says that giant strides have been made in the last decade in establishing techniques for treatment.

Together with Dr Avi Setton, an interventional neuroradiologist, Dr Chalif has been a prominent exponent and champion of the 'coiling technique'.

Using a platinum coil, surgeons can reach aneurysms in the brain by navigating a microcatheter through the carotid artery – without the need for riskier direct invasive surgery.

Dr Chalif, who is also chief of neurovascular neurosurgery, says the centre has helped boost treatment from just 30 cases a year to more than 150 – with the treatment here to stay.

"I think this is the future," he told Newsday NY.

A recent European study published in the Lancet showed a significant improvement in the fatality rates of patients who had harnessed the coiling technique.
