A new stent system using an innovative platinum-chromium alloy has demonstrated strong outcomes in clinical trials, its makers have claimed.

Boston Scientific Corporation said its Promus Element Everolimus-Eluting Platinum Chromium Stent System has delivered "excellent" results in patients with long coronary lesions.

"The Promus Element Stent achieved impressive clinical outcomes in this patient population with long lesions," said Dr Paul S Teirstein, of the Scripps Clinic in La Jolla, California.

"This everolimus-based stent, built on an advanced platinum-chromium platform, demonstrated low rates of revascularisation while reporting no cardiac death, myocardial infarction or stent thrombosis at one year."

He said the stent should offer physicians greater "confidence and flexibility" when treating longer lesions with a single stent.

The Promus Element Stent System received CE Mark approval and was launched in Europe and other international markets in 2009.

In February 2011, it was released in India, while a phased launch is commencing in China.

The stent is limited by US Federal law to only be used as an investigational device and is not available for sale in the country.
