Platinum used by world's foremost modern artist 22nd May 2006
The controversial modern artist Damien Hirst is to use platinum to craft his next piece of work.
He is to cast a skull in the precious metal, in a piece of work he has called For the Love of God.
The life-sized platinum skull will then be encrusted with 8,500 diamonds in what is thought to be the most expensive artwork ever created. It will cost somewhere between £8 million and £10 million.
Damien Hirst, who was named as the most powerful individual in the contemporary art world by Art Review, has caused controversy with his work in the past, including his exhibit of a cow cut in half and placed in a clear tank.
The only part of the platinum skull that will be left exposed by the diamonds will be the teeth.
"You need that grotesque element for it to work as a piece of art," said Mr Hirst to the Observer.
"I want people to see it and be astounded. I want them to gasp," he added.
The cost of producing the piece could pale in comparison with its eventual price tag to anyone wanting to take it home, however, which could be as much as £50 million.
