Platinum the star at Emmy Awards 22nd September 2005
A dazzling array of platinum jewellery was on display at the Emmy Awards ceremony this year, with Hollywood’s gliterrati out in force.
With Platinum Guild International's Michael O'Connor identifying a vogue amongst men for platinum luxury accessories and a wider trend for platinum "garnished in vividly coloured gemstones", a host of big names were showcasing designer work.
"Platinum, a naturally white metal with brushed and matte finishes creates a very masculine look. It is the precious metal of choice for many of Hollywood’s leading men that you will see gracing the Red Carpet at this year’s Emmys," he commented
British actor Hugh Laurie was among those to evince the trend, wearing platinum, diamond, and onyx cufflinks and shirt studs by Neil Lane.
James Spader, from the Boston Legal show, wore similar studs, this time composed of platinum, onyx, and pearl.
Among the leading ladies, Teri Hatcher, star of the smash hit series Desperate Housewives, donned a $1 million platinum, diamond, and pink topaz necklace, while co-star Nicollette Sheridan sported platinum and diamond jewellery by Harry Winston.
The West Wing's Stockard Channing wore a stunning platinum "Skeleton" leaf necklace by Janet Weller, for which the designer scooped an award at the recent Lonmin-sponsored Design Innovation Awards.
The $88,000 piece was determined by a panel of judges on behalf of Platinum Collection Magazine, with Ms Weller declaring herself "thrilled" both to have a "winning entry, and to be able to exhibit the finished piece at such a high profile event as the International Jewellery London".
